Instigated by Zep, the president of the jury in 1985 and Benoit Mouchart, the artistic director of the Festival, drawing contests are an exceptional theatrical show, which add to the festivities and above all highlight the beauty of this 9th art.

During each drawing concert a group of 10 artists design their comic strips according to a pre defined scenario in public and to music. The drawings evolve live before the spectators and the artists progress is filmed using cameras placed above the drawing tables and projected onto large screens. The public watch as drawings of all styles and forms appear before their very eyes and become complete story boards. It is absolutely fascinating to watch the artists at work, to witness every small detail and the impressive speed at which they work.

As the story takes form the live music adds to the dramatic atmosphere: seated on the stage under the large screen, the Areski Belkacem orchestra trace this ballet of pencils, pens and brushes step by step.
